Our Walk. Part One.

I know I sound like a broken record,
but I just love where we live!
I thank God every day for allowing
us to be in such a great place.

Today our family (minus Berkley) took a stroll
through downtown Watkinsville.
Kevin and I often do this route with Rosie
but today we enjoyed having the girls with us, too.
We have created a loop walk that takes about 35 minutes.
It is full of scenic and quirky small town charm.
I'd like to share it with you!

After going through the photos that I took today,
I realized that this post might win an award for the longest ever
if I put everything in that I'd like to.
So in order to (hopefully) keep your attention,
I'm going to break it into two parts--
the historic district and the business district.
I hope you enjoy learning a little more about this
sweet little town we call home.
.…..

These are a few of the houses on our street.
Aren't they great?!

{The photo doesn't do this place justice--
the house and the grounds are spectacular!}

This house sits on the corner of our street and Main Street.
The back yard is full of chickens
and on occasion we have the pleasure of spotting this guy:

That's right.
Mr. Peacock.

Many days he will cross our path as we round the corner.
Or he might be watching from a tree or fencepost.
It's such a strange delight!
……..

Do you see the first large tree on the right
 that they're approaching?

 There's something in there…

The remnant of a statue and an old photograph.
Is it a little shrine? A memorial?
I'm not sure.
It's quite creepy and yet curious.
Like a car wreck,
I find it hard to turn away.
……..

Now we enter the historic district.
Some of these homes were built in the early 1800's!

As we continue on, we near the commerical area.
Several of these older homes are now businesses like these:

The Chappelle Gallery, which is housed in the Haygood House.
The house has a pretty interesting story.

The next two houses are part of Ashford Manor.
which now serves as a B&B as well as a popular
wedding and special event location.
In the summer, they host concerts on the lawn.
I look forward to those!

The office for Ashford Manor sits in front of the first house.

Isn't it adorable?!

Just beyond the Ashford Manor is Ashford Memorial Methodist Church,
which used to be the family church of the Ashford family.

I think those arches are just beautiful.
……..
Well, I've only made it about 10 minutes into our walk. :)
{Guess you can tell I'm a bit smitten with this place.}
I look forward to showing you more of Watkinsville in my next post.

Have a lovely day!
