"There are two lasting bequests we can give our children: one is roots, the other is wings."
Hodding Carter
Roots:
1. ... means of anchorage and support*
2. origin or source
Wings:
1. a means of flight or rapid progress*
2. under one’s protection
Both are important for a healthy life:
an understanding of whose we are,
where we come from, our heritage and identity,
both in heaven and on earth.
We need both, one for grounding and stability;
the other, for dreams and leaps of faith.
Without the first, one is easily shaken and never secure;
without the latter, one is static and dulled.
There is a nice dynamic that plays out when
the balance between these is healthy:
the roots prevent the wings from flying too close to the sun,
from getting too far away from their source,
while the wings provide vitality and encourage trying new things.
It is in the practical nature of this dynamic that this blog has been born.
Its intention is to celebrate those things which ground us:
faith, family, home, and community,
as well as those things which make life interesting:
creativity, travel, and the people around us who are inspiring.
Roots & Wings will be a welcoming place to share this journey of life together. I’m glad you’re here!
